According to Laval police, there were 734 runaway cases reported from youth centres in that city last year. More than half of those cases are young girls.
And of the 127 different girls who ran away a combined 398 times, police investigations found that 33 had been sexually exploited, including some who fell so deeply into prostitution rings that by the time they were located, they were in Western Canada.
Pimps have strong grips on girls.
The younger the girls, said Alain Meilleur of Laval’s major crimes unit on Thursday, the stronger the grip pimps can have on them, making it harder for police to get them to denounce them once they’re found.
As for the alarming number of girls running away from the same centre in Laval, he places no blame on the centre itself. A lot of it comes down to word of mouth, he said.
The girls don’t necessarily realize they’re victims, he explained, and often encourage their friends to get involved as well — some see it as glamorous, some think they’re in love.
“At that age, is there anyone you trust more than your friends?”
The centre doesn’t have a locked door policy, but Daniele Dulude, deputy director general of the Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) of Laval, insists studies show the only way to help youths who tend to run away is to allow them a certain level of freedom.
“At 13, 14, 15, 16, you’re searching for your identity,” Dulude said. “They don’t know who they are yet. If you close the doors around them, you’re not helping them.”
A majority of the youths at the centre have been neglected, sexually abused, and exposed to crime at young ages, she said.
“They have to find themselves in order to not repeat those same patterns.”
‘We’re going through hell’
Hauptman and his wife, Josee Chaput, placed Sarah in the youth centre last September. They said they did it for her own safety, and to try to scare her straight after she had run away from home three other times, falling in with bad crowds and experimenting with drugs. It was the hardest decision they ever made, they said.
The couple spent Thursday running around Laval and Montreal, putting up missing person posters.
Admittedly exhausted at their home in the afternoon, they said they’re trying their best to keep it together.
“But we’re going through hell,” Hauptman said. “All I want is to get her back.”
Sarah had a normal childhood, they said. She was babysat by her grandmother when her parents would be stuck at work and had close relationships with other family members, including a younger brother. But she had trouble with school, and struggled with peer pressure and stress, Hauptman said.
By the time she was 14, she started looking for attention online, Hauptman said, and found it in the wrong places. She created Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram accounts, and started talking with strangers.
“It’s like a stranger comes into your house during the night,” Hauptman said of social networks. “You can close the doors, close the windows. But these guys get in and they sweet talk the girls: You’re beautiful. Come work with me. You’ll get money. I’ll take care of you.”
“It’s the attention, the freedom, having no obligations,” he said.
Last summer she ran away for the first time. Out the basement window. They quickly found her in the park down the street.
She ran away a couple more times before they decided to place her in the youth centre during weeknights, keeping a close eye on her during weekends and limiting her Internet access. Hauptman took all the handles off their windows, but forgot the one she used last weekend after putting it back on to air out the house.
Each time she’s run away she’s been found within 24 hours. The entire family mobilized and searched city wide, focusing on metro stations and shady motels. They’d access her Facebook account and check her phone calls, giving leads to the police.
They’ve done the same this time, but without results.
“Right now she probably feels like she has nothing to lose,” Hauptman said. “I just hope she knows we want her home as soon as possible. We love her.”
Sarah Hauptman speaks French, is 5-foot-6 and weighs about 145 pounds. She has blond hair and green eyes. The last time she was seen, she was wearing a black Rudsak jacket with a beige fur collar and a pair of Michael Kors boots.
